Senior Backend Engineer

Engineering· Berlin / Remote (EU) · Full-time

About the role

We’re looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to help build and scale the core of Shortifi — our URL shortening, UTM management, and click analytics platform. You’ll work across the entire backend stack: designing APIs, optimising database queries, and ensuring the redirect path handles traffic spikes without breaking a sweat.

What you’ll do

  • Design and implement new API endpoints and domain services using FastAPI and Python 3.13
  • Own the click-tracking pipeline: Redis Streams ingestion, consumer workers, and aggregation into PostgreSQL
  • Improve query performance and data modelling for analytics dashboards serving millions of click events
  • Write and maintain database migrations with Alembic and ensure zero-downtime deploys
  • Collaborate with frontend engineers to shape API contracts and ensure type-safe integration via OpenAPI specs
  • Participate in architecture decisions, code reviews, and incident response

What we’re looking for

  • 5+ years of professional experience building production backend systems in Python
  • Strong knowledge of async Python (asyncio, FastAPI or similar ASGI frameworks)
  • Deep experience with PostgreSQL — query optimisation, indexing strategies, schema design
  • Hands-on experience with Redis (caching, pub/sub, or Streams)
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems patterns: idempotency, eventual consistency, backpressure
  • Familiarity with SQLAlchemy 2 (async mode) or willingness to learn quickly
  • Experience writing well-tested code — unit, integration, and end-to-end
  • Comfortable working in a hexagonal / ports-and-adapters architecture

Nice to have

  • Experience with ClickHouse or other columnar databases for analytics workloads
  • Background in building multi-tenant SaaS platforms
  • Familiarity with OpenTelemetry, structured logging, or observability tooling
  • Contributions to open-source Python projects

What we offer

  • A small, focused team where your work ships fast and matters
  • Flexible remote work within EU time zones
  • 28 days paid vacation
  • Learning budget for conferences, courses, and books
  • Modern hardware of your choice
